Formerly known as Simsanggre

Williamnagar was christened after Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the first Chief Minister of the State of Meghalaya. It is 244 km from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

In 1976, Williamnagar was designed and developed as the administrative centre of the newly established East Garo Hills District.
